Jerusalem (CNN) -- Israeli police shot and killed a Palestinian man who struck two Israeli border guards in mainly Arab East Jerusalem on Friday, police said.
The border guards, on neighborhood patrol, were run over by a Mitsubishi van, said Jerusalem Police spokesman Shmulik Ben Rubi. One of the guards fired warning shots in the air and called for the driver to stop.
The border guards gave chase to the van as it continued driving into an alley, Ben Rubi said. When the driver got out and began fleeing on foot, one of the guards shot him. The other passenger in the car was injured in the incident, Ben Rubi said.
Israeli police were on high alert in East Jerusalem on Friday, after intelligence reports indicated the potential for possible riots. Israel has anticipated protests of the seizure of an aid flotilla headed for the Palestinian territory of Gaza earlier this month. Nine Turks died in that incident.
Israeli police said they restricted Friday prayers at East Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque, the site of numerous clashes in the past between Israelis and Palestinians.
